In NSW, more than a third of the waste we send to landfill is food. That adds up to about $10 billion worth of good food that’s being thrown away every year.1

Once in landfill, food waste can release methane, a harmful greenhouse gas 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide and a major cause of climate change.1

When we throw away food, we’re also throwing away all the natural resources like water and energy that went into growing, packaging, producing, transporting, selling and preparing food.1

That’s why we’re pleased to see local Curl Curl café, Curly’s on the Corner taking the initiative to reduce their food waste by creating a trial compost garden, combined with a handy seat for their patrons or passers-by.

Passionate sustainability local Linda Wong said she and her friend Karen Booth had been going to the café for more than 20 years and realised the café’s food waste was sizeable.

“Paul the owner was very keen on the idea of composting, but he just didn’t have the time to set the project up.”

“So we reached out to sustainable design champion Michael Mobbs who creates these really cool composting gardens with a seat aka ‘coolseats’.”

“They are called ‘coolseats’ because the design allows for increased aeration, speeding up the composting process.”

“Once we got support from Council for its location on the road reserve, then we were up and running. Council was happy to trial it and if successful it could encourage other businesses.”

“The garden is already starting to flourish with some herbs, veggies and edible plants.”

“We are particularly delighted that other Curly locals are so interested in what we’ve done – and hopefully some will be motivated to start their own backyard composting or worm farm,” she added.
