Laurenne Malouf has been running Sunshine Lollipops Family Day Care for two years. We asked her a few questions about her experience as an educator.
Why did you start your own family day care service?
It all started after reading an article from Northern Beaches Council about Family Day Care. This inspired me to open my very own service. I absolutely love it. I am on my second year, and I couldn’t be happier.
How does Council support you?
Council has given me all the support I need from onsite visits to being available whenever I need them. My coordinators inspire my programming, provide help with observations and check in regularly to see how the children are and how my day is going. They have also given me direction and guidance in all areas of having a successful business.
The children absolutely love their time with the family day care staff when they are here. They remember their names and faces and feel very comfortable around them.
What does your day involve?
The children have an individualised routine. They learn through play based learning and intentional teaching, which I teach based on the children’s interest and the Early Years Learning Framework.
Our days include music and movement, arts and craft experiences, group times, dramatic play, construction play, gross motor experiences and literacy experiences. The day is filled with happiness, laughter and lots of cuddles. The children start their day happy and leave my home even happier.
What do you love about your job?
I love getting to know the children and their families personally and we all have this amazing family bond, which is so important.
I like that it’s only me managing my group of children every day and I love making children feel at home and comfortable in their environment.
