We’re all familiar with the catchy Kookaburra rhyme – but how many of these beautiful native birds still exist?

This is where the annual Bird Life Australia Bird Count comes into play from 17–23 October.

You’re invited to become citizen scientists by recording which birds share your backyard and community open spaces.

The data collected will help track changes in the local bird population and its composition.

You can count anywhere you see birds — backyards, schoolyards, parks, botanic gardens.

It’s easy to do! Download the Aussie Bird Count app and spend 20 minutes in your favourite outdoor space, and then tell us about the birds you see during that period.

There’s even a built-in “bird finder” tool to help you identify birds you’re unsure of.

To learn more, visit the Aussie Bird Count website.
