Rising energy costs have prompted Northern Beaches businesses to explore sustainable solutions, with the Cottage Surgery in Manly Vale taking up the gauntlet.

Dr. Kiril Goring-Siebert, a GP at the Cottage Surgery for the past 20 years, shared his businesses journey.

“Energy prices have been rising significantly, and as a medical practice, we use a lot of power. When the energy bills were getting more and more sizable, we knew we had to look into solutions to reduce costs.”

Initially, the process seemed overwhelming. “There are so many solar panel installers out there,” Dr. Goring-Siebert explained.

“But then I spotted the Energy and Solar Expert Advisory Service through Council’s newsletter.

My phone discussion with their independent advisor was incredibly helpful, guiding us through the process. I found their advice impartial and trustworthy,” he said.

In 2023, the practice installed solar panels, which immediately slashed their energy bills. However, after experiencing power outages in 2024, they decided to invest further in energy storage solutions.

“Attending Council’s Net Zero Expo in Narrabeen provided the perfect opportunity to learn about solar batteries. I spoke to various suppliers and installers and was able to select a suitable battery,” Dr. Goring-Siebert noted.

“Now, we’re 89% off-grid, thanks to the combination of solar panels and the battery.”

“I’m aware that Council also offers other support to local businesses to help them with their renewable energy transition including the Sustainability Business Network.”

“The network facilitates face-to-face meetings, networking, and provides resources including a toolkit to help businesses implement sustainability initiatives.

“I’d recommend Council’s services to any business seeking to become more energy-efficient - benefitting both the environment and bottom line.
