Registrations are now open to the Beaches Young Filmmakers Comp hosted by Northern Beaches Council. Now in its 20th year, the Beaches Young Filmmakers Comp (formerly known as 24/7), has established itself as an innovative introduction for many young people on the Northern Beaches interested in filmmaking.

Teams have the weekend of 9-11 August 2024 to create a seven-minute short film including specific items and phrases which will be released on Council’s website at 5pm on Friday 9 August. Teams then have the weekend to create their work and submit by 11:59pm on Sunday 11 August.

Participants compete for a prize pool totalling over $7500 along with the prestige of seeing their films screened at the Finals and Awards night on Thursday 29 August at HOYTS Warringah Mall, together with their family, friends and public who are all invited.

Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins urged aspiring filmmakers to enter the competition.

“Beaches Young Filmmakers Comp is a wonderful way to learn the craft of filmmaking while having fun, picking up new skills and meeting like-minded people,” Mayor Heins said.

“If you’ve ever thought about making a short film, even if you have never done it before, why not enter. You never know where it may lead.”

Participants can also attend a free Filmmaker Workshop on Sunday 4 August at Collaroy Swim Club, with industry professionals providing insights and tips about writing, producing, tech (phones and cameras) and much more to help teams develop their skills. Places are limited so get in quick to book your spot.

Teams consist of 1 – 12 members, aged between 12 - 24 years with a minimum of one person who live, work or is educated on the Northern Beaches.

Council sincerely thanks the major sponsor and long-time supporter, now for the twelfth year, Miller Tripods.

Further thanks go to Advocate for Children and Young People (ACYP) and Glen Street Theatre for their sponsorship of this year’s Beaches Young Filmmakers Comp.

Finalists’ films will be showcased on Council’s website following the Finals and Awards Night.
