NSW Women’s Week will be celebrated from 2 – 8 March 2025 with Council’s Library Service delivering a series of writing and author panel events, showcasing and celebrating female writers living with a disability.

These events aim to promote gender equality in NSW, ensuring women and girls have full access to opportunities and choices, their diversity is acknowledged, their contributions are valued, and they can participate freely and safely in all aspects of life.

Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said Women’s Week empowers women, celebrating their strength, leadership, and unites all.
“We are committed to ensuring all local residents, especially women with a disability, feel empowered to fully participate and contribute to the local community.”

“By showcasing and celebrating the achievements of female authors living with a disability, the panel events and writing workshops aim to empower and connect this community, leading to increased creative expression and participation in community events.” Mayor Heins said.

The week coincides with International Women’s Day on 8 March 2025.

The panel discussion on Thursday 6 March, In Our Own Words: A conversation with female writers living with a disability, celebrates and explores the female perspective on writing and representation, and the empowerment that comes from the written word.

The lineup includes Gayle Kennedy, Emily Dash, Fiona Murphy and Elizabeth Wright as our panellist authors and moderator held at Glen Street Theatre with a book signing to follow at Glen Street Library.

Or learn how to express yourself and your voice by structuring your memoir to elevate your story at Fiona Murphy’s workshop, Structuring Your Story on Saturday 8 March at Glen Street Library.

These events tie in with the Library’s ongoing creative expressive programs including Open Mic Nights, Australian Poetry Slam and Author Talk events supporting increased community engagement.

Council’s libraries also have an extensive history collaboratively alongside community groups to support workshops for all members of our community.

Minister for Women Jodie Harrison said Women’s Week grants support events which uplift women and focus on challenging gendered norms.

“The NSW Government is thrilled to fund one of the most diverse range of Women’s Week events this year.

“We want these events to inspire creativity and talent, empower women of all ages and backgrounds and encourage diversity and inclusion.

“I encourage everyone to get involved in the events that are planned in your communities.”
