Council is pleased to advise the Safer Neighbourhoods Program moves to its next phase.
After listening to the community’s input on the proposed Safer Neighbourhoods Program projects for Avalon to Palm Beach, Narrabeen to Mona Vale and North Balgowlah, Council, where feasible, modified the proposals.
The approved program proposals will now be presented to the Northern Beaches Council Local Traffic Committee in May 2025 for consideration.
The Safer Neighbourhoods Program aims to reduce the number and severity of motor vehicle accidents while creating a safer environment for vulnerable road users. It encourages walking and cycling and enhances residential amenity by minimising rat-running and directing traffic to main roads like Pittwater Road.
It works in hand with Council’s Move - Transport Strategy 2038 and its Northern Beaches Road Safety Plan, which aim to return residential streets to local residents through improved network management and initiatives to promote safer and more efficient road user behaviour.
Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said our community safety, especially on our roads is a major priority to Council.
“Council is always looking for ways to improve community safety.
“A key component of the Safer Neighbourhoods Program is the reduction in the speed limit.
“Research shows that when people drive at safer speeds, there is a significant decrease in the likelihood and severity of crashes and injuries.
“Safer speeds would make our streets friendlier for people living in and visiting the area, with less noise and fewer emissions.
“It would also improve transport options by making it easier and safer to walk and ride a bike in the local neighbourhood to local destinations,” Mayor Heins said.
Due to the complexity and size of the Safer Neighbourhoods Program, it has been divided into 43 separate precincts to phase delivery across the Northern Beaches Local Government Area. It involves various measures including speed reduction, pedestrian safety upgrades, traffic calming devices and parking adjustments.
The 2024/25 program covers 5 precincts including these 3 programs, with 2 precinct programs, Beacon Hill and Frenchs Forest, already delivered.
