More than 24kms of new cycleways (off/on road) and 1.7 km of the 9kms of walkway have been completed along the spectacular Northern Beaches Coast Walk and is well on track to be finished by 2020.
The Coast Walk from Manly to Palm Beach forms part of the Connected Communities Program, a $32.6 million infrastructure investment, co-funded through the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund.
Mayor Michael Regan says the Coast Walk is a once in a lifetime project providing a safe, continuous all weather path which takes in incredible views of our entire coastline.
“The entire Northern Beaches community will reap significant benefits from this project and it will likely bring economic benefits. It will be a must-do Sydney experience,” he said.
To date, approximately 20% of the coastal path has been completed including sections at:
- Surf Road North Curl Curl
- Pittwater Road Collaroy and Narrabeen
- Robert Dunn Reserve Mona Vale
- Mona Vale Golf course
- The Boulevarde and Ross Street Newport
- Bert Payne Reserve, Newport
- Watkins Road Avalon Beach
“Next we will focus on North Narrabeen Headland Reserve to Robert Dunn Reserve along Narrabeen Park Parade and Hillcrest Avenue Mona Vale.
“This will be followed by work to Whale Beach Road from Norma Road to Florida Road in early 2019. And a major section at Palm Beach from the ferry wharf to Governor Phillip Park will be completed in August 2018.” Mayor Regan said.
The coastal works is being complemented by a series of connected cycling and walking paths at points along the route from Manly to Palm Beach. They connect the Coastal Walk with areas west to Frenchs Forest hospital precinct and Belrose, linking the B-Line transport hubs and services to these areas.
When complete the project will deliver 35.5km of new cycleway and shared paths - 12.4km off road and 23.1km on road. The Northern Beaches Coast Walk will also include new boardwalks, stairs, footpaths and tracks.
Further works are also well underway at the following locations:
- Missing sections along Pittwater Road Collaroy and Narrabeen (to commence in July 2018 and be completed in September 2018)
- Collaroy Beach – upgrade of the walkway at the southern end with an accessible pathway to Beach Road, viewing platform and two additional unisex toilets near Collaroy Rockpool (expected to be completed in July 2018).
- Marine Parade Manly – landscaping and accessibility upgrade works (expected to be completed by the end of July 2018)
- Hillcrest Avenue Mona Vale (expected to be completed by December 2018)
- Whale Beach Road from Norma Road to Florida Road (public exhibition closed on 27 June 2018)
- Design and consultation Newport to Avalon beaches.
“We are also soon to start community consultation on the Coast Walk Art Trail which will really bring the walk to life through art, culture, history and story-telling.
“I know the community is very interested in the progress of the walkway as our interactive map has had over 4800 visits and the project page has had 6000 total visits.
“Northern Beaches is an active, social and inclusive community and I am excited to deliver these projects to the community.
“We are proposing a number of consultations over the next three months and I encourage the community to give us their feedback to ensure things like design, access and safety form part of the review.” Mayor Regan said.
Member for Manly James Griffin said $14 million has been provided to the Council under the NSW Government’s Stronger Communities Fund to help deliver key projects and infrastructure on the northern beaches.
“This part of the State is well known around the world and is a major tourism drawcard. The Manly to Palm Beach Coast Walk will be an incredible asset for visitors and residents alike, offering spectacular views and improved recreational and leisure opportunities,’’ Mr Griffin said.
“The community was involved in identifying the projects funded by the Stronger Communities Fund and I am excited to see the progress of this project and look forward to its timely completion.”
