Next week Northern Beaches Council will begin the demolition and removal of the house at 40 Stuart Street, Manly, enabling 370m² to be returned to the community as part of Little Manly Beach Reserve.

Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said after the hard-fought stance by many dedicated Northern Beaches residents, it is good to see the demolition finally starting.

“Little Manly Beach Reserve is a well-loved place to picnic, swim and contemplate the stunning natural surroundings of this harbourside haven. It’s wonderful to be able to expand the reserve allowing more of the community to enjoy this special place.

“The land will be restored to parkland with native foliage and lawn, scattered with seating. A picnic shelter and table will be added and dedicated to the late Ray Mathieson. The incomparable Mr Mathieson devoted considerable time and effort ensuring the land remained in the public domain.

“With this area is steeped in First Nations heritage, Council has instituted special protocols in consultation with the Heritage NSW and the Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council, as part of the demolition and landscaping works. The area is a sacred burial site restricting the demolition to not go below 100mm, ensuring minimal disturbance of the land.”

The Metropolitan Aboriginal Land Council (Metro LALC) will conduct a smoking ceremony at the site.

In recognition of Council’s circular waste goals, where possible, the material from the demolition will be recycled.

The project is expected to take till late September 2024.
