On Thursday 15 August, Manly Art Gallery & Museum (MAG&M) presents its inaugural Collective for Environmental Art & Design (CEAD) event, a dynamic panel discussion on the theme of collective action.

In continuing its longstanding commitment to recognise the effect art and design has on environmental action, MAG&M is bringing together eminent experts and arts practitioners to discuss the impacts, interactions and actions that contribute to the conversation around the environment.

Industry-leading creative thinkers Dr Jenny Newell, Dr Lucas Ihlein and Floria Tosca will discuss the power of collective action, and the achievements possible when everyone works together to envision environmental solutions.

Dr Newell is the Curator for Climate Change at the Australian Museum’s Climate Solutions Centre. She works on the cultural dimensions of climate change, focusing on communities in Australia and the Pacific. She aims to increase engagement in environmental stewardship through the medium of museums.

Dr Ihlein, artist and Senior Lecturer in the School of Arts, English and Media, University of Wollongong, is a member of the Kandos School of Cultural Adaptation, a collective that supports artists and others who are experimenting with adaptive cultural change. It aims to foster creative work that reaches beyond the familiar contexts of art to investigate new ways of acting in the world.

Ms Tosca is a multi-disciplinary practitioner drawing on her experience growing up in a rural environment and her years working as a medical doctor. She is a member of The Dirt Witches Scrub Collective, a group of 7 cross-disciplinary environmental and climate activists who create dynamic action at the nexus of art and activism, with a focus on fighting native forest logging, protecting biodiversity and campaigning for better climate awareness.

This panel will be moderated by another industry leader, Lisa Cahill, CEO and Artistic Director of the Australian Design Centre. Ms Cahill is also part of MAG&M’s CEAD Creators Group.

Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said CEAD is a timely initiative, and we look forward to this being a continual success.

“We are fortunate to be able to bring together such experienced and creative minds to help us navigate ways to combat environmental issues and effect change through exploring alternative viewpoints and new ideas.”
