Northern Beaches Domestic Violence Network and Northern Beaches Council is asking the community to come together to say no to domestic violence by joining a community walk in Manly to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The Northern Beaches says NO to Domestic Violence walk will be held this Friday 22 November from 7am, starting from Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club, before moving along the beach front to Manly Corso.

The event precedes the commencement of “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence”, which is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls.

The campaign runs annually from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, which is Human Rights Day.

Northern Beaches Council Mayor Michael Regan said the walk was an important way to raise awareness about domestic violence.

“There is a growing awareness of the prevalence and impact of domestic and family violence in our community but we have a long way to go,” the Mayor said.

“Statistics tell us that on average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner.

“It’s only by speaking out and taking action at all levels of government and as a community that we will see those statistics come down. Everyone has the right to be safe and not live in fear in their own homes.”

Jacqueline Leonard, from the Northern Beaches Domestic Violence Network, encouraged people to participate in the walk.

“Domestic and and family violence can happen to anyone. Even though it is significantly under reported, 478 domestic violence related assaults were reported to police on the Northern Beaches this year,” she said.

“This walk is a way for all of us to show support for those impacted by violence and raise awareness to equip more of the community with the knowledge and skills to challenge attitudes and behaviours relating to this issue and how to refer people to relevant support services.”

Those interested in taking part are encouraged to register on Council’s website and also wear white clothing on the day.

A breakfast forum for services providing support to victims will also be held by the Northern Beaches Domestic Violence Network during the 16 day period.
