Northern Beaches residents are being urged to restore broken items rather than replace them, with a Repair Café being held this month to teach people how to fix wobbly dining chairs, lamps, vintage radios, electrical appliances and more.

Northern Beaches Council General Manager Environment and Infrastructure Ben Taylor said the initiative aimed to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill.

“We throw away a vast number of household items every week that can often be easily fixed.  A simple repair can save you money as well as reducing the volume of raw materials required to make new products and the amount of waste going into landfill,” Mr Taylor said.

Council will host the Repair Café at North Steyne Surf Club on Saturday, June 24, from 10am to 1pm.

Experienced woodworkers will be on hand to teach residents how to give new life to a preloved piece of furniture and replace worn out or missing parts.

Residents can also bring in a small appliance such as a desk fan, stereo equipment or remote control car, with electrical technicians advising on how to diagnose problems and conduct simple repairs.
