More people than ever will be able to enjoy the benefits of physical activity, with Council announcing the local sporting facilities and surf lifesaving club that will receive upgrades from a pool of $4 million funding.

Northern Beaches Council Administrator, Dick Persson AM said this funding allocation will deliver great outcomes for the Northern Beaches and has been made possible by the merged resources of Council.

“The upgrades will make a huge difference to the work of successful applicants and will give a lot of heart to the thousands of volunteers who make these sporting clubs work.”

Upgrades will encourage physical activity and improve the capacity, accessibility and inclusivity of sporting facilities and surf lifesaving clubs across the Northern Beaches.

“Council is committed to promoting active lifestyle choices and acknowledge the vital role that sporting associations and surf lifesavers play in our community,” Mr Persson said.

Improvements to sporting facilities will include:

  • $500,000 to upgrade the clubhouse and community centre in Lionel Watts Reserve, Frenchs Forest;
  • $150,000 for a new ‘pump track’ (BMX bike track) at the JJ Melbourne Hills Memorial Reserve, Terrey Hills;
  • $140,000 and $70,000 for the conversion of existing space into futsal courts at Manly Vale Calabria Bowling Club, Manly Vale, and Wakehurst Tennis Centre, Seaforth, respectively;
  • $140,000 for new sports field and lighting at North Narrabeen Reserve, North Narrabeen;
  • Lighting and other upgrades to various local reserves and sports facilities

Surf lifesaving clubs will benefit from:

·         $554,500 each for accessibility upgrades at Mona Vale and Long Reef SLSCs;

·         $203,500 and $150,000 to install a lift at South Narrabeen and Queenscliff SLSCs respectively;

·         $337,500 for accessibility upgrades and installation of a lift at Warriewood SLSC;

  • $200,000 for accessibility upgrades including the addition of accessible public toilets and other improvements at North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club

Funding will be allocated from the NSW State Government’s Stronger Communities Fund and Council’s own Merger Savings Fund.
