Manly will be a safer and more accessible destination for walking, after Northern Beaches Council approved recommendations within the town centre access and mobility plan.
Mayor Michael Regan said that developing and implementing the Walk Manly – Pedestrian Access & Mobility Plan would make the Manly town centre, wharf and beach areas even more appealing to locals and visitors alike.
“Manly is the gateway to the Northern Beaches in many ways as well as being an outstanding destination in its own right. This plan will improve that experience.
“Walking is good for our health, reduces traffic congestion and parking issues and makes for a more vibrant atmosphere. But walking needs to be safe, convenient and welcoming and that’s where this plan comes in.
“That’s why we are planning to invest $2.125 million under the Walk Manly program of works,” Mayor Regan said.
The plan includes the following initiatives:
- Improve access in high use areas
- Safer and more convenient crossing points at major roads
- Improve safety and mobility for the less mobile (disabled, seniors)
- Better links to public transport
- Planning for new infrastructure
The recommendations within the plan were developed following feedback from the community. The next stage will be further developing the individual projects within the plan to detailed design based upon specific community consultation.
