There's nothing quite like live music but perhaps watching it in virtual reality is close.

Northern Beaches Council is embracing virtual reality (VR) and live streaming this weekend's Manly Jazz music festival on Youtube. Over the October long weekend viewers will be able to watch performances on the John Speight stage from any standpoint they choose and absorb themselves in the festival atmosphere.

To get the true VR experience, viewers are best to watch with a headset, as simple as the Google cardboard. Viewers insert their smartphone into the placeholder, which is positioned at the optimal distance away from the lenses. The lenses create a 3D effect when held up to the eyes and the image responds as the viewer moves their head around, the result being the viewer feels they are in the same place as what's on the screen.

Council is giving away 20 pairs of Google Cardboard to the first 20 people to pop by the Council tent and share their vision for the Northern Beaches.

But you don't need a headset to watch - anyone can tune in from any device via YouTube (daily links below) and then crank up the volume.

The internationally acclaimed Manly Jazz is known worldwide for its beautiful location and the diversity of music it presents, from traditional New Orleans jazz to funk, Latin, fusion, blues, gospel, swing and roots.
