For 101 years, the Manly branch of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) has been a steadfast pillar of support in the local community. From offering aid during times of war and building lasting community connections, to today’s skill-sharing classes and fundraising initiatives, they continue to make a meaningful impact on lives across Manly and the Northern Beaches.
Their dedication was recognised this year when they were awarded the title of the Northern Beaches Community Group of the Year.
Time is running out to nominate other incredible groups and people in our 2025 Northern Beaches Australia Day Awards. From sportspeople to event organisers, young people to seniors, there’s 6 categories to recognise amazing locals – nominate them before Monday 11 November.
We spoke to Diana and Robyn, 2 members of the CWA Manly to hear about the community group’s great work.
Can you tell us about the Country Women’s Association Manly?
Diana: The Country Women’s Association (CWA) Manly branch is one of 380 CWA branches throughout New South Wales.
CWA is not just about scones, jam and cream. We’ve been supporting the community, both our members and the wider Northern Beaches community for 101 years with activities like craft and cooking sessions to teach skills, hosting speaking events as well as raising money for other local community groups and causes.
Robyn: We also have coffee mornings on Thursdays at St Matthews Church in Manly where anyone can come along for a chat and it’s a great way to make connections with others.
Tell us more about your CWA members in Manly
Diana: We’re an eclectic bunch – mostly locals from Manly, Balgowlah and surrounds but we also have a few that come over from the South side or as we say ‘over the bridge’. We have some younger members in their 20s and then through all ages!
What do you love most about being a CWA member?
Diana: The best part for me about the CWA is the opportunity to do something for someone else and they don’t even know you have done it for them. It’s lovely to help our community.
Robyn: The thing I love most about the CWA is the friendship.
How did it feel to win the Northern Beaches Community Group of the Year?
Diana: It was great to win the award not only for CWA Manly but also for CWA statewide. It was lovely to make people more aware of what our organisation does as we’re always welcome to new members!
How can locals get involved?
Diana: New members are always welcome, but anyone can attend our craft days where we teach skills like crocheting, knitting or sewing. It’s open to everyone – young and old. Come along and learn these wonderful gentle arts so they can be continued by all.
From our young trailblazers and inspiring seniors to dedicated community groups, sportspeople, and event organisers, time is running out to recognise them in our Northern Beaches Australia Day Awards. Nominate them today.
