One of Australia’s oldest boardriders club, the North Avalon Surfriders Association (NASA) now has a new home for all its gear at North Avalon Beach.
Interestingly, NASA, as it is commonly known, was formed in 1970 shortly after the Apollo 11 moon landing, and to pay tribute to this momentous event, the acronym also suitably fit the club’s name and operations.
The club’s objective is to nurture local surfing talent, hold monthly local competitions, enter teams in state and national competition, and above all to have fun!
Until recently the club’s trailer with their equipment was stored in the carpark or on a nearby street; however, thanks to a grant and additional funding from Council a new exclusive dedicated space was built for the group.
The 6.5m x 6.5m storage facility now adjoins the existing public amenities block with ample space to store their gear securely.
NASA Contest Director and committee member Phil Jones from Avalon is so grateful to Council, the State Government and the local community for wholeheartedly getting behind this project.
“There’s certainly a buzz around the club about our shed. Ours is pretty modest compared to some of the other Boardriders clubhouses – but it will be our home!
“We’re lucky that we have had lots of people willing help get this project off the ground. It will be a great foundation and cultural centre for our club – even if it is just a storage shed!
This project was made possible thanks to the NSW Government’s 2022 Community Building Partnership (CBP) Program.
