New parking sensors are being rolled out to make parking at popular beachfront locations easier and more accessible for residents and visitors. Here’s six benefits of the new system.

1. Real time information

The sensors provide real time information about how many spaces are available at each location. It's about ensuing parking spots can be shared by all and people can plan ahead and see where parking is available.

The in-ground sensors are installed beneath the surface of the road and detect when a vehicle enters and leaves a parking space. It is intended to reduce congestion at pinch points by alerting drivers to conditions ahead of time.

2. More accessible

We’ve located and mapped every accessible car space across the Beaches and will be installing sensors in more than 450 accessible parking bays from next week!  Those with disability permits will be able to find accessible parking bays close to their destination in real time, and see if it’s available.

Over time, Council will review the usage data to see how the community is using accessible spaces and use that information to help plan future infrastructure.

3. Pay via the app or the meter

Drivers can pay and manage parking through the Park’nPay app without needing to find a parking meter. However, if you prefer to pay at the meter, you can still do that.

4. Pay only for what you use

You only pay for what you need, so for example, if you enter 1 hour in the app, and return to your vehicle within 30 mins, you will only pay for the 30 minutes that you parked there. It also keeps you notified when your parking is about to expire.

5. Top up from anywhere

The app allows users to top up parking in app – so you can check or update the status of your parking while lying on the beach or from your favourite café.

6. It’s environmentally friendly

Register once and keep track of all your parking history. It is a ticketless and environmentally friendly way to pay for parking.

The sensors are being installed at Shelly Beach, Little Manly, North Steyne, South Steyne, Clontarf and Sandy Bay Road and ready to make parking a breeze in the peak summer months.
