In Australia, and especially the Northern Beaches, Surf Life Saving Clubs hold a special place in our hearts.
They’re a valuable meeting spot for members and the community. They’re also a wonderful place to enjoy the great outdoors and benefit from incredible work their members do in keeping us safe while we go beach swimming.
In recognising the value of this service to the community, Council will work with 16 of our clubs to provide surety of tenure over the coming 20 years. New agreements will be backdated to 1 July 2022, and will offer these surf clubs leases that allow for better planning and overall maintenance.
The extension of tenure is well supported in the community as it allows for greater security for the clubs and allows for better planning in relation to their ongoing, operations and ability to make capital investment in their Surf Life Saving facilities.
Surf lifesaving originated in Australia in 1907 in response to drownings at local beaches in Sydney, and right here on the Northern Beaches the very origins of Surf Life Saving New South Wales can be traced back to the actions of Mr William Gocher at Manly Beach in September 1902.
The 16 surf clubs to benefit from the 20-year lease arrangement include: Bilgola; Bungan Beach; Newport; Collaroy; Freshwater; Long Reef; Mona Vale; Newport; North Curl Curl; North Palm Beach; North Narrabeen; North Steyne; Queenscliff; South Curl Curl; South Narrabeen; Warriewood and Whale Beach.
