Move over book worms, something new is coming to the Northern Beaches which might change how you think of a “library”.
The community will have access to a collection of extremely useful “things” to borrow rather than purchase, with donations and volunteers being sought to kick start the program.
Joining forces with not-for-profit organisation The Sydney Library of Things (TSLoT), the initiative sees a collection of occasionally used items available for short-term loan to the community.
The basis of the project is to minimise working and useful items ending up in landfill, while supporting a sharing economy.
With the rising cost of living, this cost-effective solution allows people to finish projects, hold a function, entertain family and friends or spruce up the garden which they may not have been able to afford in the past.
To create the first Northern Beaches “catalogue”, the local library is hoping locals can donate items such as hand and power tools of all kinds, entertainment and gaming, party gear and decorations, home and kitchen appliances, arts and craft, camping gear and gardening tools. So far 50 items have been collected via a Council reuse and recycling event.
The library needs approximately 34 volunteers to operate, and of these 10 will be needed to help set it up. There are loads of different roles depending on your skills, mobility and time availability but you must be over 18 to apply. Find out more.
We’ll keep you posted on when the library is up and running and you’ll be able to sign up and pay a membership fee of $85 annually, $50 for 6 months and $30 quarterly. Concession card holders receive a reduced rate of $60 annually, $36 for 6 months and $22 quarterly.
This service will be a Click & Collect only with all orders to be placed online in advance.
