Swap for Good webinar - Girdlers
00:00 Is that it have you got me
00:01 That's it we've got you
00:02 Ok brilliant
00:04 Perfect, thank you
00:06 Let me just get my timer ready here so I don't go over time
00:07 I'll do some hand signals
00:12 Thank you guys for providing a platform
00:15 for this discussion.
00:16 It's very important
00:18 and very prominent in our industry at the moment.
00:20 so thanks for putting that together.
00:21 Just briefly
00:22 I have 4 venues up here on the Northern Beaches
00:25 and we've been fighting the single-use plastics
00:27 battle now for quite some time
00:28 and brought in a lot of different initiatives
00:30 into our cafes
00:31 and we're on the beachfront so we feel
00:34 a real obligation
00:36 to follow some of these regulations or ideas
00:40 that have been put together by some
00:43 oh that went off a little early, I hope I'm not over yet
00:45 put together by some really good
00:48 organisations like Swap for Good and Ocean Friendly Australia
00:52 But I'm here to basically talk about the Green Caffeen
00:55 Swap and Go system
00:56 which is one that we've been using
00:57 now for probably about 6 months
01:01 They're a couple of young guys
01:03 from the South Coast that like their surfing
01:05 and have put together a really good model
01:06 now I don't think I've seen a
01:10 perfect system put in place yet
01:12 but i think
01:14 It's almost a mindset
01:15 you know we need to go away from
01:16 that convenience mindset to
01:18 to more about responsibility
01:20 and what that means
01:22 in your local communities
01:24 and I think its
01:25 Our staff play a really
01:27 big part in delivering that message
01:29 and building relationships is what hospitality is
01:32 all about. And when those relationships
01:35 are built and our staff are confident
01:37 then just to mention little ideas
01:39 just to change customers' mindsets
01:41 because it is, you know
01:43 its not as easy as just ordering a take-away coffee
01:45 and grabbing it and going.
01:47 It's a system involved, which I'll go through
01:48 in a second. But it's important that they
01:51 understand that they can make a difference
01:53 as you guys said so earlier in the piece.
01:56 So with the Green Caffeen system
02:00 my staff find it really easy to use,
02:02 basically there's a
02:05 what is it, its an app
02:10 that you download
02:11 so once you download the app
02:14 it's basically just like
02:15 you come and you scan the app
02:17 we have a contact-free system
02:20 where there's a tray provided
02:22 the guys just put the cup into the tray
02:25 and then it's taken straight out into the dishwasher
02:26 by our back-of-house team, and then
02:30 they basically just wait in line
02:32 and the baristas then touch obviously the new
02:35 Green Caffeen cup and then make the coffee
02:39 and then hand it out to our regulars
02:41 that use that system.
02:42 Now the best thing about it I think
02:44 it's free. It's free to you as a business and it's free
02:48 to the customers which they seem to like.
02:50 Aesthetically it looks pretty good.
02:53 We like the look of it, it sort of goes with
02:55 a lot of our decor in the cafes.
02:58 And the only sticking point, I would say
03:03 is that you do have to take, within the application
03:08 some credit card details,
03:08 and people aren't always too happy
03:11 to hand those across, so that is something
03:12 that needs to be discussed with the customer
03:15 and your staff need to make that really clear.
03:18 But that's only triggered if in 30 days
03:20 they don't return one of those cups to
03:23 any cafe or restaurant that's using their system
03:26 Can be anywhere and they've got I think 4 or 500
03:28 cafes on the Eastern seaboard at the moment.
03:31 So yeah, as I said, they are really good
03:34 young bunch of fellas and they are really
03:37 proactive and they've set up a really good system
03:41 and we really enjoy using it.
03:50 And if that's over 3 minutes, I apologise.
03:52 Oh, only just. Only just.
03:55 And what's, I'd love to just hear quickly
03:55 what's the response been like since you've
03:59 put it into your business
04:04 Well it was, we didn't use
04:06 we didn't allow reusable cups
04:08 during the COVID period when
04:10 the restrictions were obviously at a higher level
04:12 so it was really good then. We were able to sort of
04:15 get people to switch across from their own
04:16 cups to the system.
04:19 It's probably transitioned back a little bit now
04:21 to be honest because people like to use their own cups
04:24 but you know, it's a work in progress
04:27 with some of the changes and regulations that governments
04:30 and different areas are going to put out
04:33 in the next 18-24 months, I think we'll see an upturn
04:38 in it again. And as I said, its free
04:40 people like the fact that its free.
04:43 Cafes, we like using it as a cafe
04:45 so i think they've done a pretty good job with it
04:48 Fantastic, thank you so much. Thanks Ryan.
04:52 You're going to hang around for questions at the end?
04:55 Yep sure.
04:56 Great, ok wonderful thank you.
