2019: A huge year on the Beaches

Video Text Transcript

2019 has been a big year on the Northern Beaches and

There’s plenty to look back on and celebrate

We started the year with 5 amazing locals being recognised in the Australia Day Awards.

Then millions across the world witnessed local surfer Jordy Lawler win the Sydney Surf Pro

Lionel Watts Reserve got an epic upgrade with two new synthetic sports fields,

And a new skate park and really cool playground

- the biggest on the Northern Beaches.

And people everywhere got active on our new bike tracks and walking paths,

Loving the new sections of Coast Walk at Palmie, Avalon and Mona Vale.

and spectacular new boardwalk at the Narrabeen Lagoon.

Here at Glen Street Theatre almost 70 thousand people came to see our shows.

Warringah Aquatic Centre turned 40 this year

And between it and Manly Aquatic Centre,

We had some 850 thousand people come to swim and have fun.

Meanwhile our lifeguards watched over hundreds of thousands swimmers,

Every household got a new greener waste service and

Across the community, we’re using less single use plastics – even in our cafes and businesses!

And over 200 thousands people came together at our big events

Over 3000 thousands children enjoyed our childcare and school holiday and programs

Our residents borrowed 1.3 million items from our libraries this year

Our community really banded together around suicide prevention

Our volunteers didn’t disappoint us either…

For national Tree Day they planted more than 3000 trees

And they helped deliver 25 thousand meals on wheels to seniors, people with disability and their carers.

One resident led us to discover a 100 year old time capsule

Another resident transformed Manly Library with a gigantic colourful mural

Tens of thousands of locals shared their feedback with the Council on plans and projects that are important to them

Thanks for having your say

And we can’t forget that Manly got named Australia’s best beach for another year.

All this, is just a small slice of 2019.

There is so much more to come as we close out the year and start a new year.

I hope you enjoy the Christmas break, we live in the world’s best kept secret, an extraordinary place here on the Northern Beaches.

Thank you for all your efforts and I’ll see you next year.
