Ochre is an exhibition which encompasses a range of landscapes (earth and water), ceramics, paintings, mixed media, and prints. The two artists Tania Murphy and Melinda Jordi travelled to Central Australia in March 2022 and were captivated by the beauty, power, ruggedness, and richness of the land. Gallery goers will be entertained by the musically talented Scott Romain from SOL FLOW SOUND, (home Digerology), who will transcend the audience with music emanating from earthly instruments whilst people walk around and view the works from both artists.

There will be both a gentle opening performance and a more closing instrumental demonstration from both Scott and Nara Jay (Newtown Performing Arts).Come and relax and be taken on a journey to the desert with one calming collaboration of acoustic guitar, soothing melodies, didgeridoo, percussion and transformative harmonies. All families welcome. There is something for everyone here, whether it be art or music...this exhibition will open your mind, get you intrigued and take you to a place of comfort and peace.

About the artists

Tania is a ceramicist and when creating, she is mindful of the world we live in. Tania creates forms to centre her thoughts, entertain, express, and to bridge ideas. She believes that art communicates messages to an audience which may spur on a past memory or situation for an individual, promoting perception and clarity.

‘The language of art and the informal connections we make with materials, textures, colours, and form can lead us back to memories or moments and enhance our understandings. Having recently experienced the rich and remote Central Australia, I managed to absorb the human history of the land and the stories of sacred sites. These connections influenced my work for this show, Ochre’

Melinda (Min) is an artist proficient in printmaking, painting, and mixed media drawings. Her work is diverse yet distinctive, rich in texture, colour, and subject matter. As an artist, she likes to explore possibilities and often being quite experimental by re-using papers, fabrics and anything deemed appropriate to incorporate in her work. Her mixed media art works are playful and innocent but are created with intent and careful consideration of colour and composition. The artists more recent native work and Uluru series, accomplished with the posca pen, has a more sensitive quality, and brings out more of Min’s drawing skills.

‘I’m enjoying detailed drawing again and exploring how this can be combined with a more abstract quality. I like to mix, blend, rip paper and attach it to the work, until the artwork has a balance of colour, theme and takes me back to a particular place in time’
