Warm up your fingers this winter with this creative woolly kit. Using wool and objects you will make colourful decorations for your room.

In your kit you'll have the supplies to make a woolly animal, letter or an eye of God hanging charm.

Included in your kit:

  • A selection of colourful wool
  • A4 cardboard sheet
  • 4 x pegs
  • 2 x pop sticks
  • a handful of stuffing

What you will need:

  • Scissors
  • A pencil or marker

Method:

Wool Letter

  1. Start by drawing a large letter in bubble font on your corrugated card sheet. Make sure your letter is nice and big.
  2. Cut out your letter using scissors.  
  3. Pick your starting point and cut a small slit in the cardboard. It only needs to be 3mm deep.
  4. Slide the start of your wool string into the slit, this will hold your wool.
  5. Now start winding the wool around the letter, covering up all the cardboard as you go.
  6. If you want to start a new colour, repeat step 3 or tie the wool together with the end of the first string and the start of the second.
  7. Continue on until your cardboard is completely covered. Display your letter on a shelf or add a string to hang on your doorknob.

Animal

  1. Draw the shape of your animal on the cardboard not including the legs and tail. You can use the wooden pegs for legs and wool for a tail.
  2. Cut your animal shape out using scissors.
  3. Add your leg pegs to the cardboard
  4. Pick your starting point and cut a small slit in to the cardboard. It only needs to be 3mm deep.
  5. Slide the start of your wool string into the slit, this will hold your wool.
  6. Now start winding the wool around the animal, covering up all the cardboard.
  7. If you want to give your animal some dimension to their body pack the sides with the included wadding and wrap the wool around. This will give them a tummy.
  8. If you want to start a new colour, tie the wool together with the end of the first string and the start of the second.
  9. Enjoy your woolly friend.

Eye of God hanging charm

  1. Begin by crossing two sticks to form an “X”.
  2. To secure those sticks, and keep them in place, wrap a piece of wool around the intersecting points of the stick. You can knot your wool to start, or you can just trap the tail under the wool as you start wrapping. Do a few wraps in one direction, and then rotate your sticks, and do a few wraps in the other direction to ensure your sticks are stable, and won’t shift.
  3. Wrap your wool around one stick, close to the centre, and take it over to the next stick.  Wrap it around that stick, and take it to the next stick. Continue wrapping and winding in that fashion, rotating your craft as you work. Whether you wrap the yarn over the sticks or under doesn’t matter, as long as you are consistent.
  4. If you want to start a new colour, tie the wool together with the end of the first string and the start of the second.
  5. Continue until your weaving is 1 cm from the end of the sticks. Secure the wool by tiring it to the last stick.
  6. Add a string to hang your God’s eye.
