The Sustainability Business Award recognises businesses on the Northern Beaches that adopt and promote sustainable practices.

Checklist actions

Points will be awarded for efforts made in the selected topics: Energy, Water, Waste, Sustainable Transport, Building Management, Purchasing & Procurement, Production & Manufacturing, plus Policy, Staff & Community.

For each answer please list headline information and, where possible, indicate if the action is a complete change or partial adaption.

1. Energy

We recommend you download our Energy Self-assessment Checklist, which includes examples to help guide your answers.

Ideas include: LED lighting, renewable energy (solar panels, batteries, green power), end of day power offs, yearly energy audits, use of energy efficient appliances, tracking energy consumption.
2. Water

We recommend you download our Water Self-assessment Checklist, which includes examples to help guide your answers.

Ideas include: water saving technology, dual flush toilets, capture and reuse of water, system or policy to resolve leakages, appliances have at least a 4* water rating  
3. Waste

We recommend you download our Waste Self-assessment Checklist, which includes examples to help guide your answers.

Ideas include: minimal use of paper, digital communications (rather than paper), use of 100% recycled paper, recycling bins, composting bins for organic waste, formal waste management system, encouraging use of reusable water bottles, cups and containers.
4. Sustainable transport

We recommend you download our Sustainable Transport Self-assessment Checklist, which includes examples to help guide your answers.

Ideas include: opportunities for employees to commute sustainably, encouraging active transport, virtual meetings where possible, flexible work around congestion times, alternative fuel for fleet vehicles.
5. Building management

We recommend you download our Building Management Self-assessment Checklist, which includes examples to help guide your answers.

Ideas include: minimal use of paper, digital communications (rather than paper), use of 100% recycled paper, recycling bins, composting bins for organic waste, formal waste management system, encouraging use of reusable water bottles, cups and containers.
6. Purchasing & procurement

We recommend you download our Purchasing & Procurement Self-assessment Checklist, which includes examples to help guide your answers.

Ideas include: efficient HVAC systems, sustainable purchasing policy, local sourcing, prioritising sustainable and ethical purchasing, natural, sustainable or environmentally conscious cleaning, kitchen and office supplies and products, purchasing carbon credits to offset their emissions.

Ideas include: carbon emissions are measured and reported, use of recycled materials during manufacturing, exploring new sustainability avenues and collaborations.

Ideas include: sustainability coordinator or committee, exploring new sustainability avenues and collaborations, diverse and ethical recruitment policies, staff health and wellness initiatives, participation in charity events including volunteering, donating and collaboration with other businesses, tracks emissions and implements sustainability initiatives.
