John S Ball grew up in New Jersey and New York in the 1960s and 70s, gaining early exposure to internet technology and children's education through his father's connections as an educational psychologist. After moving to Sydney in 1975, he completed his tertiary education at various universities. He now travels between Northern Beaches and California, where his business focuses on researching developing technologies.

Challenged by a past Professor's quote, "computers will never understand human language", John went on to invent Patom Theory, a model for machine language use, leading to patents in 2007. His software suggests that human language issues can be solved without processing.
