Mart Basa’s solo exhibition ‘Mountains’ was inspired by a visit to the south of France to see family and make art.

An art residency in Provence saw Mart explore shapes and colours while experimenting with various styles and landscapes. What he discovered inside himself was mountains filled with colour and a yearning to return to his adopted homeland in Australia.

Mart has been painting for five years and before that, illustrating. ‘Mountains’ explores the interplay of interior and exterior worlds – a mixture of painting en plein air and from memory in his bedroom.

The paintings are largely untitled, and are intended to be viewed collectively, as if the viewer stands surrounded by a mountain range, yet with enough room to comfortably focus in on a single mountain at varying distances at any one time.
