MAG&M holds over over 100 letters by and to Antonio Dattilo-Rubbo offering insights into the artist and the Gallery from 1925 to 1940s. They also provide a deeper view of Dattilo-Rubbo: a prolific writer of letters, often three or more in a week, and with impeccable English - his second language.

Response to letter from RA Penfold.
Rubbo advises Mr Marriner the need for Mr Penfold to be informed that the gallery honour roll was donated by a lady and expenses were not known, she donated £20 for the roll’s construction.  Rubbo explains Penfold was willing to offer discount on manufacture cost of £10 from the final price. Rubbo explains that Mr Forsythe can also verify this information. Rubbo asserts final cost needed to be known from Penfold and was informed not over £30. Rubbo advises if cost is more, it should be subject to a valuation. Rubbo wants the matter resolved by clearly stating; “ It surprises me and I don’t feel to discuss this matter with Mr Penfold any longer.” (Rubbo, 1925, p2)

Rubbo writes to Mr Marriner informing him of a meeting between Rubbo and Penfold regarding price of roll.  Rubbo’s view changed and believes Penfold justified in questioning discount to roll when donated by an external person.  The roll costs £30 (or 10 Guineas) with discount taken to twenty pounds. He is willing to give extras to value of 10 guineas if lady offers the balance of 10 pounds.  Rubbo suggests resolving issue. “I would advise you to invite him to our meeting and let this matter settled in a very amicable way.” (Rubbo, 1925, p1)

Offer by A Dattilo Rubbo of another artwork to Manly Art Gallery. First portrait of Rubbo done when living in Manly, which ‘to the opinion of experts is far better than the later ones I painted which I have sent to London.” (p1). The work appeared in the exhibition titled, 'father and son’ in 1923, later renamed to ‘Self Portrait’. Work was held onto by Rubbo’s wife.  “Indeed I presented it to my wife who has kept this picture very jeoulousely (sic)- and always thought of it as the picture belonging to the family.” (4/3/30)

Following committee decision to purchase Rubbo work “Boccaccio” and addition of Rubbo’s name to the founder’s board of the gallery (est. 1924?). Rubbo advises that the committee arrange a stand for the sculpture “Victory of Samothrace” which Rubbo intends to give to gallery.  Rubbo advises he will bring into the gallery “as I consider it a good attraction to the gallery”. Rubbo seeks a letter from council asking for the storage of the works until “the gallery is ready to house them.” Requests that the statues be removed on any Saturday or Wednesday from his place after the ‘marine’ show is over- as “on these days I can call there at night and see that everything is ok”. Rubbo writes to express concern about the delivery of statues to Manly. Ready for collection Monday 27 November 1939. Rubbo feels is unwise to use Anthony Hordern carriers as ‘general deliveries’ and not specialised to carry sculptures. Rubbo outlines that he had to engage a special carrier for the removal from town and ‘event then an accident happened’ and that damage would cost the committee. Rubbo hopes this is possible and can be available to oversee the delivery. Suggests a Manly carrier “and no less than two men to lift the Venus”(Rubbo, 1939, p1).

Rubbo apologises for not attending meeting due to the flu. Rubbo suggests to be forwarded to meeting to ask permission of council to place honour board in a prominent position “as to direct people to the Manly Art Gallery in the same way as the national Art Gallery has done to the entrance of the Domain.”
Rubbo notes that many people ask where the gallery and believes this is a good idea.

Miss Blaxland, ex Rubbo pupil, teacher of modelling at technical college, invited Rubbo to sit for a bust. Nearly completed and ‘a very successful work’. Rubbo suggests presenting it to the gallery as Blaxland not represented in collection. Rubbo would like committee and Marriner to see it before it is cast, and in bronze like finish.  Blaxland has a studio 195 George Street opposite Port Jackson hotel, next to Nock and Kirby.  (Number BW 5230). Marriner is to call before arriving.
Other news in letter, Colonel Spain has a ‘nice collection of pictures’ “ and he is willing to donate us another one out of his collection – I am going to call at his home and see what I can match for us… do not leave the inspection of the bust too late. Yours ADR” (Rubbo, 1940, p1)
Editor’s note: Donation Rubbo mentions is possibly the donation of the Tom Roberts’ ‘The Flower Sellers’ or other significant work in Spain’s Collection.

“After an unpleasant waiting for an enquiry about my political activities my innocence has proved, as usual, the protection of British Justice and am home a free and loyal subject of my adopted country which I love more than the one where, by accident, is born- I feared nothing and I may add, that my usual generosity and social life brought upon me the suspicion of disloyalty I believe through my Title, and then a donation to an Italian Club on one of my works and a monetary contribution towards expenses for furnishing it. That’s all, but nevertheless I don’t blame the authorities for the steps taken no matter how innocent it may have been. I shall be pleased to attend your meeting when called and talk matters over. In the hope that the dear friendship of all members of the committee has not been minimised, through an unpleasant incident, believe me.

A sad letter that resounds of the loss of his wife and a significant document announcing the end of Rubbo’s link to the gallery committee.
Reference to donation of works to Manly Art Gallery following death of Rubbo’s wife and resignation from committee.

“My dear friend Marriner,
“I received your notice together with the information regarding your visit with the other two friends mentioned my latest gift of 30 pictures which my dear wife appropriated to herself on a mutual consent, that should she survived (sic) me, the works had to be added  to my collection in our art gallery – unfortunately she has passed away, and true to our agreement, I see no reason to hold these pictures any longer- knowing that there is no wall space for them, I would suggest to rearrange the collection in my room with pictures you consider best- while others could be hanged anywhere where space is available in the big gallery- the art committee, of course, has a right to advise, and I cannot help, doubting their complacency and sincerity on this matter - In any case, they should be reminded that myself, with the enthusiastic cooperation of Mr Trennery, I was one of the most active worker to achieve what we have to day- they have come in at a “Fait accompli”- Is that enough?-
Since the sad loss of my wife, I do not feel to be much the interested in the outside world! - I love the quietness of my home, avoiding, ironically speaking, the company of brother artists-socials etc- and therefore I have decided to resign from your committee- In due time I shall forward my resignation- I would suggest you the names of Merrs Murch or Townshend- both artists living in the vicinity of Manly – I may be wrong in my troubled mind, nevertheless I do not feel to be the same individual as before- accept my best wishes and believe me (This letter is Private to you).

Less than a month after his moving letter to Marriner announcing his resignation from the gallery committee, Rubbo writes about the donation of further works to expand the gallery collection. Rubbo asks Mr. Marriner to convey to committee and Manly Council information regarding the collection of paintings donated by Rubbo to gallery. Rubbo wants to remind committee that initial list of donations was not complete at the time due to ‘the wanting of suitable works not available”. Ideal number of donated works was 100. Rubbo has 30 latest works “to select from to complete the collection, beside a suggestion of exchanging some of my older works with the latest ones.” Rubbo hopes there is no issue with the selection of works, to ensure”… a high standard of artworks”. Rubbo expresses concern that members of the committee are unavailable to attend regular meetings due to their commitments as artists and the War Effort. Rubbo suggests the creation of an art advisory committee “not less than three”, called when art works are proposed for donation or purchase.
Rubbo refers to delivery of works to “Parkers George Street” as a convenient location works can be viewed. (Editor’s note: Parkers were the suppliers of art materials in Argyle Street The Rocks. All Sydney artists used them as framers as well). Rubbo also recommends new members of the committee being local citizens and “art lovers who may be of substantial help to the gallery.” (Rubbo, 1943, p1).
Rubbo refers to the principle reason for leaving the gallery committee was inability to make meetings, however if committee constitution changed, “I would be willing to cooperate in the work as I have always done since the inception of the Manly Art Gallery”(Rubbo, 1943, p2).

A very interesting letter from Rubbo espousing the value of the gallery and frustration at the fact it is overlooked by members of the “Society of Artists”.
“What I cannot explain in a few words – why this Society has always ignored the great achievement of Manly in the Art World-by having an Art Gallery unique in Australia, I cannot explain…I cannot show to the Society of Artists their neglect or injustice to the efforts of a good citizen as MrTrennery”(Town Clerk, integral in support and establishment of the gallery-Editor’s note)….
…In my opinion at least, such medal (awarded from the Society of Artists to outstanding art community members) should be given to the Manly Council as the only and first municipality in NSW to initiate an Art Gallery….
(Editor’s note: Broken Hill is officially the first and oldest regional art gallery in NSW established in 1904).
…I would not let this matter drop before any enquiry and satisfactory reasons are given by this so called “Society of Artists”. You can keep the enclosed circular as they are of no use to me”(Rubbo, 1945, p2).

Letter from Rubbo apologising for absence from dinner party due to illness. The dinner party of Mr P.S Garling, donor to Manly Art Gallery. Interesting reference to copies of old masters including Rubens that Garling donated or intended to donate to the gallery.
Rubbo states in the letter,
“No doubt he has been a very generous sympathiser, by his valuable gifts, even if the old masters mentioned in your letter, are copies of them- My remarks are based on one of the pictures you mentioned “Christ and his disciples at Emmaus” by Rubens- this work is on show at the Museum Del Prado in Madrid  - and it would be liable to call it original as I have not seen the work…” (Rubbo, 1947, p1)
Rubbo refers to another painting by Carraci (a copy) that he
‘cannot say much until I can see them- but I have a strong feeling to be the same as Rubens-“ (Rubbo, 1947, p1)
Rubbo mentions a ‘potboiler painter’ who painted watercolours thirty years before and the need to know as much about Manly’s collection for future generations.
Rubbo also re-iterates the importance of an extension to accommodate the expanding collection. Quoted from the letter;

“There is a name which I am well acquainted with –Mr Henry Tebbit, a pot boiler painter in watercolours, engaged in contract work with a German dealer here, Mr Aldenhouen (spelling unclear) some thirty years ago- He spoiled the future of this man by making him painting(sic) landscapes from photos- and then sold them as masterpieces –in WaterColours. Poor Tebbit- finished on a pig’s farm for quarrelling with this dealer who was exploiting him- I hope that the gifted work is the best of this artist-
I mentioned these facts known to me- in the interest of the gallery, so as to know as much as possible the history of our collection for the future generation-(sic)
We need extension of our walls-which in its short existence of the Gallery, are already overcrowded, while our safe, I hope, will in the future, needs to be enlarged in the same ratio-“ (Rubbo, 1947, p1)

Lady enquired about work titled “Rough Road” wishing to buy for 8 Guineas (Rubbo sought 10 Guineas, but accepted offer).
With letter, Rubbo enclosed cheque for the Art Gallery funds. (No evidence of cheque remains with records here-ed).  Rubbo requests that Marriner send the female buyer a copy of the ‘Catalogue’. Letter from Rubbo to Marriner expressing concern about the return of artworks to the gallery will take more time due to the discovery of mildew on two of the paintings (specific works unknown). Rubbo is concerned about the outbreak, due to damp of humidity and suggests treatment with linseed or poppy seed oil to remove. Rubbo continues that the mildew could return in a worse form as the oil will grow rancid and encourage new growths to break out.
“I am glad to have discovered it in time and capable of doing the work myself, which I could never be successful, if I had not the photographs of the pictures.”

Rubbo needs time to treat these and repaint the works and wonders if the walls are damp (of his home in Mosman?- Editor’s note). He recommends a regular inspection of the works (every 8-10 years) by an expert ‘from the National Art Gallery”. Rubbo will advise when works are ready.

Being organised by the “Ente Autonomo Mostra d’Oltremare’ under auspices of Italian government, exhibition aims to show scope of Italians working abroad who have migrated and settled. Exhibition comprises 18 pavilions throughout Naples and includes an Australian and New Zealand and Pacific Island pavilion.
“A section of the Australian Pavilion will be dedicated to Italian artists in Australia and their pupils. Rubbo considers wise to delay request and mentions ‘antagonism’ of Society of Artists ‘towards (Rubbo’s) suggestion of recognising the efforts of the Manly Council in favouring art” (Rubbo, 1953, p1). Rubbo notes that the catalogue and publications of the Manly Art Gallery committees show that members are from the Royal Art Society and not one member is from the Society of Artists, which may indicate the cause of the ‘antagonism’ Rubbo refers to. Rubbo states;
“I never thought or enter (sic) my mind such situations, which as simple and unintentionally is created, may be the cause of snubbing our Institution.
Having the President of  the Royal Art Society as Vice Patron and not the President of the Society of Artists- it may be felt a snobby (sic) in our side towards the Society of Artists- that “Presidency”  may be the cause of the indifference displayed - I cannot suggest anything on such delicate situation-but, I do know the feeling of members of the Society of Artists-towards members of the Royal Art Society! Even myself I am not much trusted in the Society only because I was member of the Royal Art Society for over 25 years-“

1) That you will make a gift to the gallery of the whole of the pictures now in your possession (excepting those pictures specifically mentioned by you)
2) That out of the aggregate Collection which the Gallery will then hold the Committee is to select those pictures which it is desired to retain permanently and then arrange for the sale, by private sale, of any which the Committee may not desire to retain permanently.
3) That you propose to make provision in your Will to bequeath to the Gallery an amount which you will determine which is to be held for investment to provide income to be used for the purpose of picture restoration.

“Dear Mr Star,

Following my recent interviews with Mr. Twigden, Mr Herman Slade and yourself, and in your letter to me of the 23rd August last, I am now in a position to say that I have consulted my Solicitors, and they are preparing a new will for me. As the founder of the Manly Art Gallery, you and your Committee will appreciate the fact that I have always kept the welfare of the Art Gallery prominently before me, and I trust that that suggestions I am about to make in this letter will be given careful consideration by your Committee, and, if possible, carried out.

By my Will, after making provision for a self portrait, a portrait of my wife and family sketches, and eighteen pictures to be taken from my collection of pictures painted by me, I direct the remainder of the said collection of pictures to be disposed of in the following manner-by my Trustees appointing an Artist from the Society of Artists and an Artist from the Royal Art Society and Miss F.D Ellis, together with all the Artists who are members of the Committee of the Manly Art Gallery, a Selection Committee which is to sit under the chairmanship of the Mayor of Manly, who is to have a casting vote only.

Such Selection Committee shall make a selection from the remaining pictures of the pictures they consider suitable for the Manly Art Gallery, and the pictures then remaining shall be offered for sale at an Exhibition to be arranged at  some local Art Gallery chosen by such Selection Committee, and the net amount received for the sale of such pictures shall go to the Manly Art Gallery in augmentation of a legacy which I am giving under my Will. I have also provided that any person who owns one of my  for a picture in the said Exhibition, and, if at the end of such Exhibition such picture has not been sold, then the Selection Committee shall, without making any charge for such picture, make the exchange. I then go on to say that, within one week after the said Exhibition has closed, all pictures not sold, and all earlier pictures receive in exchange for the pictures exhibited in the Exhibition, shall be destroyed by fire. It is my desire that the Manly Art Gallery shall only keep permanently in the Gallery such of my pictures that the Selection Committee considers best. I would like the Committee of the Manly Art Gallery, when the aforesaid selection is made by the Selection Committee, to get the Selection Committee to cull from the pictures which were painted by me, and are already owned by the Art Gallery, such pictures as it considers not desirable to retain permanently. I then suggest that the Committee of the Manly Art Gallery sell either privately or at the Exhibition the pictures mentioned earlier in this paragraph which the Committee does not desire to retain permanently in the Gallery.

The legacy which I am giving I feel should be used to create a Fund for the restoration and maintenance of the pictures in the Art Gallery. I now suggest to the Committee that they create such a Fund and that the legacy and money received from the sale of the pictures be placed to the credit of such a Fund, and the Fund be invested to the best advantage. Any income not used in any year for restoration and maintenance should be accumulated until such accumulation reaches the sum of £100.0.0d., when the Committee should purchase any suitable picture or pictures for the Art Gallery, preference being given to a picture or pictures painted by an Australian Artist or Artists.

I wish all success and a great future to the Manly Art Gallery as an accredited and well recognised Art Institution in Australia.
